When your child is overwhelmed s/he is operating from the downstairs brain, or lizard brain. Literally the options are fight, flight or freeze. Not a lot of problem-solving going on. To get to the solutions, the child has to come up into his upstairs brain. The more often she does this the easier it becomes to do.
