13 More Reasons Why — Silver Hill Hospital
I haven't watched any of the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why." We don't watch a lot of TV, and with time being limited, I focus on something of high interest, or something I can really veg out to. A series of stories that validate a teen's suicide doesn't do it for me.
But with the recent suicide deaths of Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade, Robin Williams and so many others, this article from Silver Hill Hospital about the show feels timely. Don't miss the links at the bottom of the post to help you talk about some of the topics with your kids.
Some highlights from the article:
"If your child has experienced suicidal or self-injury avoid the show altogether."
"If you see your child experience significant sustained changes in mood, appetite, energy, school avoidance, isolation or anxiety speak to his/her pediatrician and/or mental health professional. Only 20% of children in need of mental health supports across the US actually receive it."
Please read about the warning signs of suicide at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and in this article by Katie Hurley, LCSW. And remember that some medications, particularly SSRIs, that are supposed to help one feel better often can magnify ideas of suicide.
If someone you know shows warning signs of wanting to attempt to take his or her life, do not leave him or her alone. Remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt. Take the person to an emergency room or a medical or mental health professional, or call the number below.
Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK), or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741-741 to talk about your own life or someone else's.
